Workshop I- The Poetic Body – Thomas Prattki

The Poetic Body
A new generation of performing artists is changing the landscape of todays theatre. Devised theatre and performance is no longer a fringe phenomenon, but has turned into an influential international movement. Collaboratively devised productions inspire audiences worldwide and reflect the radically shifting paradigms in contemporary life and art. Nonlinearity, plurality , multiculturalism and a new understanding of the human body in relationship to surrounding and inner spaces are some of the most prominent changes in contemporary life and are strongly reflected in the artistic quest for new forms of young theatre and performance artists.The support of this growing movement is at the heart of our programs at the London International School of Performing Arts. We offer a strongly movement based pedagogy to theatre and performance artists and consider the idea of Embodiment as a pathway to a deeper understanding of the physical body we have, the subtle body we are and the collective body we all have in common. An exploration of the dynamic relationship of these different bodies allows for a deeper understanding of what we call The Poetic Body, a precondition for the process of creating/devising original work. The workshop will introduce participants to some of the most important dynamics of the Poetic Body and their impact on the performer as a creator. Through use of the Neutral Mask participants will be invited to explore the relationship between the physical and the imaginative, the individual and the collective, the personal and the transpersonal. Principles of push and pull, being with, for and against will be explored through a highly physical approach and applied to the process of devising theatre and performance.
Thomas Prattki is founder and director of the London International School of Performing Arts, an international center for devised theatre and performance, which has welcomed students from 49 different countries since its inauguration in 2003. Before launching LISPA, Thomas has been the pedagogical director of the Jacques Lecoq School in Paris. He has directed, lectured and taught worldwide in over 30 countries, pursuing his interest in the ever evolving power of the human imagination and its role in the process of personal and artistic growth.
Workshop II – Meeting the mask and characters of Commedia dell’Arte – Claudio de Maglio
“Meeting the masks and characters of Commedia dell’Arte“
During the XVl century Europe was divided in various fragments and oppressed from conquest and religion wars, but the actors of Commedia dell’Arte was traveling through all territories and playing comedies that everybody could understand and enjoy… They were very successfull because they were putting together the lesson coming from the Renaissance and Courts- Theatre, with a more “high” and literature level, with the most popular “Square-Theatre” and were playing recognizable social types, easy to identify for different audiences thanks to special techniques that concern the use of mask for some of the characters. From our recent history we can gather a challenge for actors’ pedagogy and dramatic art through the universal language of theatre that belongs to this incredible vital world of masks and characters. That’s why Commedia dell’Arte is a kind of “European dimensioned theatre” in the sense that it includes and exalts every specificity, every language (even dialects, mother tongues…) and at the same time gives to the actors the great opportunity to be understandable through a precise technique.
In a very short time we’ll go through some important steps of this charming universe of Commedia dell’Arte:
1) “The body of the Mask”: developing the body-training, the energetic level and techniques for “meeting” the masks.
2)”The body of Characters”: analysis of the principal Characters and the specific way of every actor to adapt them to their skills.
3) “Discovering my best-preferred Character”: exploration and improvisations.
Workshop III – Afro-Cuban folklore for actors and dancers

Led by Actors from the University of Arts of Cuba
The goal of this workshop is to work on the energy of original Afro-Cuban dance; this is essential to understanding how Cuban actors perform. Through dancing and acting exercises, participants in the workshop will come to experience the sensations that this technique delivers. They will play characters based on saints through a combination of folklore-based dancing and acting.
